Through heavy research and user-submitted information, we have compiled a large list of financial institutions that not only use ChexSystems, but will deny you if you’ve had too many inquiries.

It’s a very good idea to check this post before applying to open a new account – especially if you know you might have a few extra inquiries.

As a reminder, you are allowed to get a free copy of your ChexSystems report once a year. For more information on ChexSystems, you can read our post here.

There are a lot of people who make a decent chunk of money each year by opening bank accounts for bonuses during a promotion, and this post will help answer the age old question of “How many accounts can I safely open for a bonus?”.

Also of note, if you are declined an account due to ChexSystems, you are entitled to fresh copy of your report per the FCRA.

Banks / Credit Unions That Are Inquiry Sensitive

Most of this information is based on user-submitted data about experiences they’ve had. These applications were declined with a clean report (no negative accounts) but a number of inquiries between 12-20. Be advised: you may have a different experience on your own.

  • Banco Popular
  • Bank of The West
  • BBVA Compass
  • Byline Bank
  • Capital One 360
  • Carver Federal Savings
  • Citibank
  • Discover Bank
  • Elevations Credit Union

  • Ridgewood
  • Sandy Spring Bank
  • Valley National Bank

While the above banks (and more) are usually hesitant to open accounts for consumers with “too recent” or “to many” ChexSystems inquiries, the below banks have been known to use other factors to open accounts and may allow you to skirt around a large number of ChexSystems inquiries.

Banks / Credit Unions NOT Inquiry Sensitive

  • Chase
They use ChexSystems and rely mostly on Early Warning Services (similar to ChexSystems) since they own a major stake in EWS. Inquiries are easily looked over.
  • Wells Fargo
Same as Chase, they are an owner of EWS, so they overlook inquiries on ChexSystems, but usually do a hard pull on credit.
  • Mountain America Credit Union
Will pull ChexSystems and deny 100% if you have any negative accounts listed. They do not care about inquiries.
  • Navy Federal Credit Union
They pull EWS, usually known for not pulling ChexSystems which means they won’t care about inquiries. (For how to join NFCU as a civilian, see our post here.)
